Joel Nakitare

Joel Nakitare is a highly motivated Information and Data Specialist with over 18 years of extensive experience as an Information Manager, trainer, researcher, and consultant, particularly focused on rural communities. Joel has led the development and implementation of transformative projects across the information ecosystem. Notably, his expertise includes library automation, digitisation, and the organisation and facilitation of data and information literacy training both locally and internationally.

Joel is passionate about promoting digital hygiene, open data, digital transformation, and literacy among disadvantaged communities. He is an active researcher with seven publications in Scopus-indexed journals and has served as a co-principal investigator in securing two research grants. He holds a Master of Arts in Library and Information Studies from Kenyatta University, a BSc in Information Sciences from Moi University, and is a PhD candidate at the Technical University of Kenya. He is an alumnus of various international training programmes, including the LIB@WEB International Training Programme in 2018, the CERN UNESCO School on Digital Libraries in 2021, the CODATA-RDA School of Research Data Science in 2022, the NMT Strategic Leadership and Management of Higher Institutions of Learning (DIES), and the 2024 DIES University Leadership and Management Training Course.

Beyond his professional roles, he is passionate about the culture of reading and community empowerment. He has established over 200 school libraries and trained more than 300 teachers and community librarians across Kenya. He also volunteers with several community organisations, including Kusoma International and Laurenti Mohochi Educational Foundation, and serves on the boards of St. Francis of Assisi Boys High School – Kolongolo and Kangeso Boys High School.
